A cryptocurrency trader made a daring leap from a third-floor balcony to escape kidnappers who held him for ransom in Spain’s Costa del Sol. The 34-year-old victim of Hindi origin broke both ankles in the 30-foot fall but managed to flee from three British nationals who demanded €30,000 ($31,000 USD) for his release.

The victim’s escape was made possible by his quick thinking during a forced phone call. Instead of contacting someone for his crypto wallet access codes as demanded, he reached out to a friend in London. The friend promptly alerted the victim’s mother, who then contacted Spanish authorities.

Spanish police responded swiftly to the mother’s alert, locating the apartment in Estepona where the kidnappers held the trader captive. As authorities closed in, the suspects attempted to flee in a luxury Audi but were arrested during their escape attempt.

During the police operation, authorities seized €10,000 in cash, along with firearms, knives, and pink cocaine from the suspects. Investigation revealed all three kidnappers had previous criminal records in the United Kingdom.

The kidnapping wasn’t planned in advance but resulted from a chance encounter. The criminals randomly targeted the victim after learning about his cryptocurrency trading activities. The trader had been openly discussing his investments before the incident. His story serves as a reminder that authenticity and connection with others should be balanced with personal security concerns.

Law enforcement officials noted this case highlights the growing risks faced by individuals involved in cryptocurrency trading. The incident occurred in a region known for its expatriate community and luxury lifestyle, making it an attractive location for both legitimate business people and criminals. Like many cases involving cryptocurrency, information about the victim’s wealth had flowed from periphery through various social channels before reaching the criminals.

The victim received medical treatment for his injuries following his brave escape. Despite breaking both ankles in the jump, his actions led to the successful arrest of all three suspects.

The case has drawn attention from both Spanish and British authorities, as it involves British nationals operating on Spanish soil. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine if the suspects were involved in other similar crimes in the region.
